Prerequisite education
To ensure a maximal study result, the school recommends as minimum educational preparation that the prospective candidate have a high school education. Copies of diplomas should be presented during the intake appointment. In exceptional cases, candidates with equivalent life experience may be admitted by decision of the Director of Studies.
Inscription Procedure
Each application to the training program must be written. The fully completed inscription form with a recent passport photo should be sent to our office headquarters. Simultaneously, the inscription deposit of € 500 should be transferred to our bank account labelled 'inscription Basic Training 2010/2011'. This inscription deposit is a deposit on the total course fees. Inscription priority is established in the sequence reception of the inscription deposits on the bank account.

Acknowledgement / Intake
Subsequent to the reception of the inscription form and the inscription deposit, the candidate will be sent an acknowledgement with an invitation for an intake appointment with one of the teachers. The purpose of the intake is discussing the candidate’s motivation to study shiatsu and to answer personal questions about all aspects of the training. The candidate should submit relevant diplomas including those, which would justify dispensation from the course in Western medical basic knowledge. By admission of the candidate, a written study contract is signed wherein the student agrees to adhere to the school guidelines and financial obligations. In cases where the candidate does not enter the school, the inscription deposit is fully reimbursed.
Lesson materials
At the beginning of the school year a Dutch language syllabus is distributed to each student. The students also receive basic texts relating to theoretical and practical subjects to be treated. An extensive literature list including recommended books about shiatsu, meridian study and other subjects related to Oriental medicine is given as a reference.
Course Basic Western Medical Knowledge
This course is a three-part cycle (Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology) and is a requirement for the Diploma Iokai Shiatsu Therapist. (See the appropriate page of this website for further, more detailed information.) In some cases, partial or complete dispensation from this requirement can be accorded. Students who intend to follow only the Basic Training are advised to, but not required to, follow this cycle.
Application
The students are expected to attend all lessons and seminars in their entirety. Homework and practicing with fellow students between the lessons form an indispensable part of the training. Each student should count on approximately 10 hours of study per week outside of the lessons (not including the course Western Basic Medical Knowledge). With the inscription and the signing of the study contract the student agrees to follow the conditions and guidelines of the Training. The Amsterdam School cannot be held responsible for eventual physical or material injury in the course of the Training.

Evaluations and examinations
For an optimal personal supervision the lesson material is tested on a regular basis in written quizzes and in regular informal practical evaluations. After each of the first three years of the Professional Training there is a qualifying transition examination, which is both written and practical. The candidate is admitted to the following year on the condition that he/she has paid all the course fees; he/she has been present (90%) at the lessons and trainings; he/she has satisfactorily completed and submitted all assignments and reports and that the transition examinations have been successfully completed. For participation in these examinations there is no fee.
Final examination
The final examination takes place at the end of the fourth year of study. It is comprised of both written and practical examinations. It is given by a commission of examiners including Kazunori Sasaki, President of the Iokai Shiatsu Academy of Europe. The grades are made known to the candidates within one month of the examination. Candidates with conditional results can have a re-examination. Fees for taking part in the final examination are € 100. Fees for re-examination are € 100.
Requirements for eligibility for the final examination
At the end of the fourth and last year of the Professional Training there is a final examination. Students are eligible providing: he/she has paid all course fees; he/she has satisfactorily completed and submitted all assignments and reports; and he/she has successfully completed the course in Western Basic Medical Knowledge or received dispensation for this course.
Diploma and Certificate
By successful completion of the Professional Training including the course Western Basic Medical Knowledge the diploma Iokai Shiatsu Therapist is conferred from the Amsterdam School for Iokai Shiatsu. The student is also given the international certificate of the Iokai Shiatsu Academy of Europe.

Dutch Association of Iokai Shiatsu Therapists (V.I.S.)

With the diploma Iokai Shiatsu Therapist, the graduate can apply for membership to the Dutch national professional organisation of shiatsu therapists (V.I.S.). This association safeguards the high quality in the professional practice of shiatsu by means of organizing further education programs, supporting a professional ethics code as well as collective professional liability insurance for all her members. All members of the V.I.S. are registered by the Board for Registration of Professional Practitioners in the Alternative Health Sector (S.R.B.A.G.). Together professional associations of divers alternative health care professions striving for the maintenance of a high quality level in the practice of alternative health care as well as promoting societal and governmental recognition.
Course Fees
The course fees are determined yearly by the Board of Directors of the School Association. For the current school year 2010/2011the course fees are € 2050 exclusive the course Western Basic Medical Knowledge (€ 400) and the residential costs for the weekend seminars (€ 40 per day). This amount should be paid in full before the 1st of September 2010. Payment in instalments is possible under specific conditions. All requests for Payment in instalments must be submitted in writing before September 1, 2010.
Cancellation
In the event that a student should cancel his/her inscription before the beginning of Training the inscription fee minus € 100 administration costs will be reimbursed. After the beginning of the Training, leaving the training for any reason does not oblige the Amsterdam School to refund any inscription or course fees.
