Japanese massage therapy
Shiatsu – the art of touch. Learn how to work on meridians and treat physical and energetic complaints according to the Japanese tradition.
What makes shiatsu different from a regular massage?
Shiatsu is not just a form of massage; it is a form of therapeutic massage rooted in ancient Eastern medicine. Over 2,500 years ago, holistic health philosophy emerged in China, rooted in connection with nature. This approach focuses on balance – between yourself, your lifestyle, and your environment. This philosophy emphasizes the life energy (Ki): the flow of energy that connects the body, mind, and environment.
While massage training primarily focuses on relaxing muscles and treating tissues, Shiatsu goes a little deeper. A Shiatsu therapist works with the circulation of Ki in the body. This is done through pressure on meridians – the energy channels – as well as stretching and movements that support the natural flow of energy.
More than just a massage technique
What makes the Shiatsu massage therapy training special is that you not only learn to treat, but also learn to observe and feel from your own body. You develop awareness of your posture, breathing, and energy. For only when the body and mind within you are in balance can you work from a place of calm and attention – and thus bring something into motion in the other person.
Shiatsu is therefore more than just a way of touching. It is a path in which you learn to treat and care for yourself. A therapeutic craft that touches upon life energy – in others, and in yourself.
Working from your own center
One of the core principles of Iokai Shiatsu is the Japanese concept hara. The word hara In Japanese, ‘hara’ means ‘abdomen’. Hara is both our physical and energetic center and plays a fundamental role in the Japanese tradition. It is a deeply rooted concept in Japan. Being present in hara means being still, alert, and present with awareness without wanting or seeking anything.
When we touch from hara, it is done without forcing, but with a gentle and clear presence. It is a touch without prejudice, without the thought that we have to do or achieve something. It is a touch from silence, pure and with integrity. This principle forms the basis of Iokai Shiatsu and makes the treatments effective and pure.
