Iokai Shiatsu Massage Training

“Learn Shiatsu massage in the Japanese tradition – with personal attention, practice-oriented education, and space for your own development. For yourself and the other person.”

Iokai Shiatsu massage training

Shiatsu is more than just a treatment method – it is an art that you learn from person to person, from heart to heart (I Shin – Den Shin). You develop your skills in a direct and experiential learning environment, where knowledge, insight, and dedication from the teacher are passed on to the student.

In the Iokai Shiatsu massage training, you receive personal guidance and a lot of attention for your learning process. You not only learn how to support others in their health, but also grow as a person. Shiatsu is therefore also a path of personal development.

The training is modularly structured. You can start at your own pace and deepen your knowledge. After the first module, you can already provide relaxing treatments. If you want to learn to apply shiatsu as therapy, you can continue through the subsequent modules.

Do you want to get started, but would rather get to know each other in detail first? Then join in first with a Test module. You can now follow this course at a greatly reduced price! After the trial module ends, you decide whether to enroll in the entire basic level.

The training is also suitable as a complement to an existing profession in healthcare or body-oriented support.

Join a trial module

Are you interested in taking the Shiatsu training course, but not sure if you really want to commit to a full year of lessons? Start with a practical trial module. This module is offered several times a year. You will follow classes in one of the practice centers for about two months, giving you an accessible introduction to the course.

In Amersfoort, the Proefmodule consists of four Sunday sessions from 9:30 to 17:00. In Amsterdam, you attend classes on nine Monday evenings from 19:00 to 22:00. In Delft, on nine Tuesday evenings from 19:00 to 22:00.

Around the summer we have a special trial module in Amersfoort. See the dates for this in the data sheet.

Afterwards, you decide whether you will continue with the rest of the basic level. It is worth knowing: The module includes a full practical module (kata) of the basic level. After completion, you will have already completed a part of the basic level and can continue with the other modules.

Grant fund

You can participate in a pilot module and take advantage of our funding opportunity. This is a contribution from organizations that sponsor us and support our thinking. This allows you to participate in the pilot module with an attractive grant.

The grant is only awarded once per student.

What makes our shiatsu massage training unique?

You learn Shiatsu by doing it. In the classes you get explanations and demonstrations, after which you immediately practice with fellow students. You are also encouraged to continue practicing outside of class – for example with study partners, family or friends.

The theory is clearly structured and practically applied, and is always directly connected to practice. In this way, you develop an understanding of Eastern medicine – not only with your mind, but also with your hands and through experience.

Through the online learning environment, you have access to readers, assignments, videos, webinars, and your study results. This way, you can also continue studying, deepening your knowledge, and practicing at your own pace from home.

  • High quality from the Eastern perspectiveOur shiatsu massage training is based on the teachings of Kazunori Sasaki Sensei, one of the closest assistants of Shizuto Masunaga, the founder of Iokai Shiatsu. You learn shiatsu as it was originally intended, with a holistic view of health.
  • Practice-oriented from day one90% The first year consists of practical exercises. From the very beginning, you practice Shiatsu treatments on your fellow students and learn by doing.
  • Personal attentionWe work in small groups, so you always receive personal guidance from our experienced teachers. This helps you develop your own style and grow as a therapist.
  • Flexible and modularYou can sign up for individual modules or for the entire basic year. The program is designed so that you can combine it with work or other obligations.

    • You learn to treat both physical and mental complaints in a deeper way.
    • The teachers are of a high level, engaged, and support you in your growth.
    • The combination of practice and theory helps you apply everything you learn immediately.

“After working in the healthcare sector for many years, where the pressure is high and there is less and less time for personal attention with clients, I was looking for more depth in my profession. The Iokai Shiatsu massage course offered me that holistic approach, treating both the body and the energy flowing through it. What I particularly appreciate about the course is the combination of personal development and the practical focus on the profession. The teachers are a major strength of the course: they bring a wealth of experience and guide you with great attention and care, allowing you to truly grow.

Now that I’m in my third year, I’m noticing that I’m calmer and more balanced. In two years I want to start my own practice and help people in a meaningful way, with more attention and peace of mind than I ever found in healthcare.

What will you learn in the Shiatsu massage training?

The Iokai Shiatsu massage training course consists of four levels and is modularly structured. After each module or level, you have learned more and are now able to expand your shiatsu treatment. This way, you can gradually improve your skills. If you ultimately want to be recognized by the health insurance companies, you must complete all the modules of the training course to become an accredited Iokai Shiatsu therapist.

A characteristic feature of the Iokai shiatsu massage training is the strong focus on practice, personal guidance and learning from experience. You develop not only as a therapist, but also as a person: with more energy, vitality and balance.

Basic level

You will learn the basic techniques of shiatsu and practice in various positions (lying on your stomach, lying on your back, lying on your side, sitting). In addition, you will become familiar with the theory of oriental medicine and take courses in therapeutic training. After the course, you will be able to provide relaxing treatments.

Modules: practice modules: lateral, supine, dorsal and sitting positions. Includes basic theory and therapeutic training

Meridian level:

You learn to work with meridians and the flow of Ki. You develop a greater sense of energy work, deepen your understanding of the theory, and further develop self-awareness through Do-In and meditation.

Modules: Meridianian theory and practice 1 and 2 including therapeutic training and entrepreneurship

Diagnosis level

You learn to make diagnoses and develop treatment strategies based on Eastern pathology. You further deepen your knowledge of Ki diagnosis, observation, and therapeutic skills.

Modules: Diagnosis & treatment strategy 1 and 2 including therapeutic training and entrepreneurship

Clinical level

You further deepen your knowledge of diagnosis and treatment, work with trial patients under supervision, and prepare for practice as an independent Shiatsu therapist. You complete this level with an international exam.

Modules: clinical treatment 1 and 2 including therapeutic training and entrepreneurship

Finalizing the learning path

At the end, you show that you are working at the hbo level.
You choose between:

Frequently asked questions

When does the training start?

You can start the basic year 3x a year, in October, December and February. If you are new, you can start with a part of the basic year by taking a trial module. You will then follow 2 months of lessons and learn to give a complete treatment. After that, you decide whether to continue with the rest of the basic level. You can register for the Amsterdam, Delft or Amersfoort location. In Amsterdam, the lessons are on Monday evenings from 19:00 to 22:00. In Delft and Amersfoort on Sundays from 9:30 to 17:00.
The lesson schedule can be found here

What are the admission requirements for this program?

People from various backgrounds start our training. You don’t need any specific massage knowledge or knowledge of Eastern medicine to start. Step by step, we ensure that you master the profession as a Shiatsu therapist.

Since you will receive a diploma at HBO level, we do impose certain requirements on your previous education. These requirements are at least HAVO, VWO or MBO-IV level. If you do not meet these requirements, you may still participate in the program under certain conditions. If you have any questions about this, please contact us.

Do I have to register immediately for 4 years?

No, you can start with a shiatsu trial module first and only after completing this trial module will you decide whether to continue with a subsequent module or the rest of the basic level (basic year). Also, after completing the basic level, you will only decide whether to continue with the meridian level.

After the basic year (basic level), you can already start giving relaxing shiatsu treatments. If you wish, you can also charge money for this. To ensure that you meet all legal requirements, you will then become a student member of the professional association and take out professional liability insurance.

If you choose to make Shiatsu your profession, the training takes 4 years and 4 months. Because we want you to master shiatsu at a high level, this length of time is really necessary. Because we teach at an HBO-compliant level of 240 ECTS (credits), you also meet the requirements the tax authorities require for the VAT exemption (so you don’t have to pay VAT). Furthermore, your treatments are recognized by the health insurance companies. During those 4 years, we teach you entrepreneurial skills as well, if you want to build a successful private practice.

How much time does it cost me?

In the first year, the study is perfectly compatible with a full-time job and a busy family life. You have an evening class once a week on average. You practice the material once a week with friends and people in your immediate environment. In addition, you have some assignments that you discuss and work out with a study group. In the later years, the workload gradually increases. You will be dealing with more topics and writing reports.

How many hours you actually study (or practice) varies from person to person. The important thing is that you see shiatsu as something you enjoy doing. Where your passion lies and what makes you happy. Spending time on something that makes you happy is nice to do.

What we generally see is that students in the third and fourth year experience that shiatsu becomes a part of their lives. Often, they choose to free up time for their studies by, for example, working half a day less a week or spending time on developing and expanding their own shiatsu practice.

What do I learn?

In the basic year you learn the foundation of Iokai Shiatsu; everything you learn in these modules is necessary for the rest of your studies. The focus is on developing good touch and being able to apply the basic techniques to the receiver’s body in different positions.

The first year is also an introduction to the basic principles of traditional Eastern medicine. The traditional Eastern way of thinking is fundamentally different from that in our Western society. During the theoretical classes, we introduce you to this way of thinking.

To improve your own body awareness, fitness and body control, we start every class with Do-In, Ki training, meditation or occasionally with Qi Qong.

In addition to the subject-specific shiatsu modules, you will also begin therapeutic training in your first year. You will learn how to give feedback to each other and how to take a neutral position during shiatsu treatments.

If you successfully complete all the modules of the basic level, you will receive a certificate. You can then give a deeply relaxing treatment to the people in your environment. You have learned to use your body in the right way and to touch someone in a way that is effective and pleasant to receive. Additionally, you have experienced personal development on a physical and mental level.

What are the costs?

You can here find the costs.

Is it possible to pay in installments?

You can pay for the entire basic level in 8 monthly installments.

What makes the program unique?

We are primarily a practical training program. Our classes consist of 90% hours of practical training in the first year and about 70 to 80% hours in the following years. Shiatsu is a practical skill. Your skills determine a large part of the effectiveness of your treatment. Of course, your theoretical knowledge is also important, but our focus is primarily on the practice. The theory we teach is based on many practical examples and in a way that you don’t just learn the material from your head, but also understand it in its simplest form.

During the lessons, there are always multiple teachers/assistants present to support you and be there for you when you need them. We believe in a personal approach where every student feels comfortable.

We are a European organization that places high demands on the teachers and assistants who help you during your studies. Annual training sessions for the teachers take place and attention is paid to the proper teaching methods. The teachers undergo annual training sessions from, among others, Kazunori Sasaki. One of the most prominent shiatsu teachers in Europe and also one of the closest assistants to the late Shizuto Masunaga.

“During my work in the cultural sector, I felt the need to do more with my hands and spend less time behind a desk. The Iokai Shiatsu training appealed to me because it was not just about relieving physical complaints, but also about restoring balance and energy. The structure and quality of the training are strong and help you step by step understand and feel the teachings of Eastern medicine. This not only helped me treat others but also helped me find more balance for myself.”.

Now that I’m building my practice, I see how valuable this training has been, both professionally and personally. If you want to help other people, you’re open to discovering a new world, and you want to go through a development process yourself? Then this training is a must-try!”
