Japanese massage therapy

Shiatsu – the art of touch. Learn to work on meridians and treat physical and energetic complaints through the Japanese approach to massage therapy.

Massage therapy training with deepening

Are you looking for a massage therapy training that goes beyond technique? At Iokai Shiatsu, you will learn to work with attention, touch, and energy – in the tradition of Japanese medicine. You will develop into a therapist who not only alleviates symptoms, but also contributes to recovery and balance on a deeper level.

Shiatsu is more than just a massage technique: it is an art that you learn from person to person, in a direct and experiential learning environment. You practice with real touch, receive personal guidance, and learn how to work on meridians – the energy channels of the body.

The training is modular in structure. This means that you can start at your own pace and deepen your knowledge step by step. After the first module, you can already give relaxing Shiatsu massages. If you want to use Shiatsu professionally as therapy, you can grow through the follow-up modules to become an accredited therapist at HBO level.

The training is also very suitable as a complement to an existing profession in healthcare, massage, or body-oriented therapy. You can complete your studies at the HBO level, allowing you to have treatments recognized by the healthcare insurance companies.

Would you like to get to know each other first? Then join a test module: A compact introduction that gives you a taste of what working with life energy involves. Now with a €250 subsidy for the first 8 participants! So don't wait too long. After the course, decide whether you want to continue with the other modules of the basic year.

What do you learn during the Shiatsu massage therapy training?

The Iokai Shiatsu training is modular and consists of four levels. You go through the training step by step – after each module or level, you choose whether to continue deepening your knowledge. This way, you determine the pace at which you grow as a Shiatsu therapist.

In the first modules (basic level and meridian level), you learn the essential massage techniques of Shiatsu and how to work with meridians – the energy channels of the body. You discover how to stimulate the flow of energy through pressure, stretching, and touch. Ki (life energy) is promoted. You also get acquainted with Eastern medicine and learn the function and meaning of meridians in relation to health and vitality.

In the next phases (diagnostic level and clinical level), you deepen your understanding of therapeutic work. You learn to make diagnoses and develop treatment strategies based on Eastern pathology. In doing so, you train your observational skills, develop Ki diagnosis, and practice creating treatment plans. In this phase, you prepare for the practice as a self-employed Shiatsu therapist. Upon completion of these levels, you receive an HBO-level diploma.

You learn Shiatsu primarily through practice. Each lesson includes explanations, demonstrations, and plenty of time for practice with fellow students. Outside of class, you are also encouraged to continue practicing – for example, with family or fellow students. This way, your skill develops in a natural, practical way.

The theory always aligns with what you learn in practice. You not only develop knowledge of Eastern medicine, but above all learn to feel, observe, and act based on experience.

Through the online learning environment, you have access to study materials such as readers, videos, assignments, webinars, and your own progress. This way, you can continue learning at home – at your own pace.

What is Iokai Shiatsu?

Iokai Shiatsu is an Eastern medicine practiced using your hands. At its core is the concept of ‘Ki’, or life energy. Eastern medicine sees our health, our thoughts, and how we feel as a form of energy (Ki). With Shiatsu massage therapy, you work directly on this life energy (Ki) and ensure that it can flow properly.

We all have blockages in our bodies. This is caused by external influences, experiences from the past, or the way we have lived our lives. This results in a less efficient flow of Ki. This can manifest in various complaints such as:

• little energy
• headache
• excessive thinking
• not feeling comfortable in your own skin

If Ki does not circulate properly for an extended period of time, it can cause serious health problems. With this Shiatsu massage therapy course, you will learn to give a massage that ensures Ki flows again and improves symptoms.

With Shiatsu, you help improve your clients’ Ki circulation. But you also learn to improve your own Ki circulation. You gain more energy, become healthier and more stable.

What is the difference between a massage training course and a Shiatsu massage therapy training course?

Shiatsu is not just a form of massage; it is a form of massage therapy rooted in ancient Eastern medicine. Over 2,500 years ago, a holistic view of health emerged in China, rooted in connection with nature. This approach focuses on balance – between yourself, your lifestyle, and your environment. This view of life is based on the energy of life (Ki) Central: the flow of energy that connects the body, mind, and environment with each other.

While massage training primarily focuses on relaxing muscles and treating tissues, Shiatsu goes a little deeper. A Shiatsu therapist works with the circulation of Ki in the body. This is done through pressure on meridians – the energy channels – as well as stretching and movements that support the natural flow of energy.

What makes the Shiatsu massage therapy course special is that you not only learn to treat, but also learn to perceive and feel from your own body. You develop awareness of your posture, breathing, and energy. Because only when your body and mind are in balance within yourself can you work with peace and attention – and thus move something in the other person.

Shiatsu is therefore more than just a way of touching. It is a path in which you learn to treat and care for yourself. A therapeutic craft that touches upon life energy – in others, and in yourself.

  • The practice-oriented approach ensures that you learn from day one by doing
  • The training brings not only physical, but also mental and emotional changes
  • You develop yourself and learn to help others on a deep level

“As a gym owner and former professional footballer, I have always been interested in health and the body. The idea of self-healing and energy appealed to me greatly, but it took me a while before I dared to take the step to the Shiatsu massage therapy training. When I saw on the open day how teacher Tjerk was treating someone and literally seeing the energy flow, I knew this was it.

The shiatsu massage therapy training is very practice-oriented, which suits me perfectly. From the very first lesson, you are already working on yourself and others, and that makes the learning process really powerful. The structure is very clear: you start with the basics, but within a short time you already feel great changes in your body and mindset. The teachers guide you well, and I also learn a lot from my fellow students.”

Shiatsu as a complement to your massage therapy or physiotherapy practice

Many students who follow the Iokai Shiatsu massage therapy training already have previous training in massage or a background in bodywork. The Eastern view on health and working with life energy (Ki) are often reasons for further deepening in Shiatsu.

Do you already have a Basic Medical Knowledge diploma? In that case, you will be exempt from taking the course.

Do you want to learn to apply Shiatsu within your existing practice – without having to complete the full therapeutic training immediately? Then there is a special program developed for professionals like you.

Development of the program

This compact course is intended for massage therapists and physiotherapists who want to integrate Shiatsu into their work. You will study:

  • 2 basic-level practice modules
  • 1 module of the Meridiaanniveau
  • 1 lesson day ‘Integration of Shiatsu in your practice’

During these modules, you will learn the fundamentals of Shiatsu and how to work with meridians and Ki. The integration day helps you to apply Shiatsu in a natural way in your own treatment style.

The modules start at different times throughout the year. The integration day is given twice a year in Amersfoort.

“After working in the healthcare sector for many years, where the pressure is high and there is less and less time for personal attention with clients, I was looking for more depth in my profession. The training to become an Iokai Shiatsu massage therapist offered me that holistic approach, treating both the body and the energy flowing through it. What I particularly value about the training is the combination of personal development and the practical focus on the profession. The teachers are a major strength of the training: they bring enormous experience and guide you with great attention and care, allowing you to truly grow.

Now that I’m entering my third year, I’m noticing that I’m calmer and more balanced. In two years” time, I want to start my own practice and help people in a meaningful way, with more attention and peace of mind than I ever could find in healthcare.”

Frequently asked questions

When does the Shiatsu massage therapy training start?

You can start the basic year 3x a year, in October, December and February. You can register for the location in Amsterdam, Delft or Amersfoort.
The lesson schedule can be found here

What are the admission requirements for this program?

People from various backgrounds start our training. You don’t need any specific massage knowledge or knowledge of Eastern medicine to start. Step by step, we ensure that you master the profession as a Shiatsu therapist.

Since you will receive a diploma at HBO level, we do impose certain requirements on your previous education. These requirements are at least HAVO, VWO or MBO-IV level. If you do not meet these requirements, you may still participate in the program under certain conditions. If you have any questions about this, please contact us.

Do I have to register immediately for 4 years?

No, you start in the basic year. Even in the basic year you can start with individual modules to experience the course first.

After the basic year, you can already start giving relaxing shiatsu treatments. If you wish, you can also charge for them. To ensure that you meet all legal requirements, you will then become a student member of the professional association and take out professional liability insurance.

If you choose to make Shiatsu your profession, the training takes 4 years and 4 months. Because we want you to master shiatsu at a high level, this length of time is really necessary. Because we teach at an HBO-compliant level of 240 ECTS (credits), you also meet the requirements the tax authorities require for the VAT exemption (so you don’t have to pay VAT). Furthermore, your treatments are recognized by the health insurance companies. During those 4 years, we teach you entrepreneurial skills as well, if you want to build a successful private practice.

How much time does it cost me?

In the first year, the study is perfectly compatible with a full-time job and a busy family life. You have an evening class once a week on average. You practice the material once a week with friends and people in your immediate environment. In addition, you have some assignments that you discuss and work out with a study group. In the later years, the workload gradually increases. You will be dealing with more topics and writing reports.

How many hours you actually study (or practice) varies from person to person. The important thing is that you see shiatsu as something you enjoy doing. Where your passion lies and what makes you happy. Spending time on something that makes you happy is nice to do.

What we generally see is that students in the third and fourth year experience that shiatsu becomes a part of their lives. Often, they choose to free up time for their studies by, for example, working half a day less a week or spending time on developing and expanding their own shiatsu practice.

What do I learn?

In the basic year you learn the foundation of Iokai Shiatsu; everything you learn in these modules is necessary for the rest of your studies. The focus is on developing good touch and being able to apply the basic techniques to the receiver’s body in different positions.

The first year is also an introduction to the basic principles of traditional Eastern medicine. The traditional Eastern way of thinking is fundamentally different from that in our Western society. During the theoretical classes, we introduce you to this way of thinking.

To improve your own body awareness, fitness and body control, we start every class with Do-In, Ki training, meditation or occasionally with Qi Qong.

In addition to the subject-specific shiatsu modules, you will also begin therapeutic training in your first year. You will learn how to give feedback to each other and how to take a neutral position during shiatsu treatments.

If you successfully complete all the modules of the basic level, you will receive a certificate. You can then give a deeply relaxing treatment to the people in your environment. You have learned to use your body in the right way and to touch someone in a way that is effective and pleasant to receive. Additionally, you have experienced personal development on a physical and mental level.

What are the costs?

You can here find the costs.

Is it possible to pay in installments?

Yes, you can pay in eight monthly installments.

What makes the program unique?

We are primarily a practical training program. Our classes consist of 90% hours of practical training in the first year and about 70 to 80% hours in the following years. Shiatsu is a practical skill. Your skills determine a large part of the effectiveness of your treatment. Of course, your theoretical knowledge is also important, but our focus is primarily on the practice. The theory we teach is based on many practical examples and in a way that you don’t just learn the material from your head, but also understand it in its simplest form.

During the lessons, there are always multiple teachers/assistants present to support you and be there for you when you need them. We believe in a personal approach where every student feels comfortable.

We are a European organization where high standards are set for the teachers and assistants who help you during your studies. Annual training sessions for the teachers take place and attention is paid to the proper way of teaching. During the second, third and fourth year, you will also receive personal lessons from Kazunori Sasaki. One of the most prominent shiatsu teachers in Europe and also one of the closest assistants of the late Shizuto Masunaga.
