Iokai Shiatsu Training

“Learn Shiatsu with personal attention, practice-oriented teaching, and space for your own development. For yourself and the other person.”

Learn Shiatsu for yourself and the other person. With attention and skill

At Iokai Shiatsu Netherlands, you learn Shiatsu as it was originally intended: with attention to touch, awareness, and the relationship between body and mind. The training offers a clear structure in which personal development and professional craftsmanship go hand in hand.

The Iokai Shiatsu training is practice-oriented, modularly structured, and accredited. You can start with a single module to get acquainted with Shiatsu, or choose the full course to become an accredited Iokai Shiatsu therapist. This way, the training will grow with you.

Shiatsu is a Japanese treatment method that originated in Eastern medicine. You learn to work with meridians, tsubo, and the flow of ki, the life energy that connects the body and mind. By applying targeted pressure and coordinated touch, you support the body’s natural healing ability and restore balance where tension or fatigue has built up.

A training that grows with you

Shiatsu is not just learned from a book; it is learned through doing, feeling, and reflection. In the training, you develop technical skills as well as refining your perception. Attention, breathing, and posture form the foundation.

Each module combines theory and practice. You learn to treat meridians, apply pressure with thumbs, fingers, and palms, and work on the futon. At the same time, you explore what touch does, how to remain present in contact, and how to build a treatment that resonates with the other person.

Discover what shiatsu can mean for you

Whether you work in healthcare, are already a masseur, or want to deepen your knowledge of the relationship between the body and mind, the Iokai Shiatsu training offers a path of learning where knowledge, experience, and personal development come together.

During the training you will become familiar with the theoretical principles of Shiatsu, such as meridians and the flow of ki. But above all, you will learn how to apply Shiatsu based on attention, alignment, and engagement. You will develop a way of working in which technique and presence reinforce each other.

Each exercise brings you closer to the essence of touch. You experience what focused pressure can mean for relaxation, recovery, and awareness. Not only does this increase your skill, but also your confidence in working with the body.

If you want to experience for yourself what Shiatsu can do for you, you are very welcome to attend an open day. During this introduction, you will get a feel for the atmosphere, the structure of the shiatsu training, and the way of teaching at Iokai Shiatsu.

Overview of the Shiatsu training courses

The Iokai Shiatsu School offers a coherent range of introductory courses, vocational training and further training.

Our training is rooted in the tradition of Iokai Shiatsu as taught in Europe. Kazunori Sasaki. In this line, careful touch is central, with attention to posture, breathing, and the development of the therapist. This keeps the connection to the Japanese origins alive, while the training simultaneously aligns with contemporary practice in Europe.

Basic knowledge and introduction

Shiatsu trial module – An introduction to Shiatsu in a fixed treatment format. In two months, you’ll learn to give a complete treatment in one of the basic positions: supine, prone, or standing.  The module includes a complete practical module (kata) at the basic level. After completing it, you will have already completed a portion of the basic level and can move on to the other modules. If you want to go deeper, you can proceed directly afterwards.

Professional Shiatsu training

Shiatsu massage training – The full and accredited professional training for a Shiatsu masseur or Shiatsu therapist. In this training, you develop yourself step by step into a professional therapist, with a solid foundation in meridian theory, treatment techniques, and therapeutic skills.

Shiatsu modules – An overview of the structure of the shiatsu training by module and study year. Here you can see how theory and practice deepen and how the training gradually expands towards therapeutic work.

Specializations and further training

Shiatsu chair massage training – In this training, you learn to apply Shiatsu in short, effective treatments in the chair. Suitable for those who want to work in companies or on location and for those who want to expand their practice with accessible treatments.

Further training courses – a varied program for therapists and advanced students who want to develop further. Think of topics such as pregnancy and childbirth, meridian masterclasses, and a postgraduate diagnostic module. Each refresher course offers space for deepening, exchange, and refining your therapeutic skills.

Shiatsu is a form of manual therapy that fits well with fields such as physiotherapy, massage, and coaching. In the Iokai Shiatsu training, you learn to apply this treatment method carefully and thoroughly. You develop the skills to guide clients in restoring balance, paying attention to both the physical and energetic aspects of health.

The philosophy behind shiatsu

The philosophy of Shiatsu is based on the principle that qi must be able to flow freely in order to maintain balance between the body and mind. When this flow is disrupted, symptoms such as tension, fatigue, or a sense of imbalance can arise. Shiatsu focuses on supporting this natural movement.

Within the Iokai Shiatsu training, you develop a foundation in Eastern medicine. You learn to work with meridians and meridian points, and gain insight into how targeted pressure and mobilization support the body’s natural mobility.

Shiatsu is a therapeutic form of treatment that focuses on restoring energy balance. By connecting touch, breath, and attention, a treatment is created that works deeply. You experience how coordinated pressure not only brings relaxation, but also increases awareness – both in the other and in yourself.

Nurse / Second-year student

    • You learn to treat both physical and mental complaints in a deeper way.
    • The teachers are of a high level, engaged, and support you in your growth.
    • The combination of practice and theory helps you apply everything you learn immediately.

“After working in the healthcare sector for many years, where the pressure is high and there is less and less time for personal attention with clients, I was looking for more depth in my profession. The Iokai Shiatsu massage course offered me that holistic approach, treating both the body and the energy flowing through it. What I particularly appreciate about the course is the combination of personal development and the practical focus on the profession. The teachers are a major strength of the course: they bring a wealth of experience and guide you with great attention and care, allowing you to truly grow.

Now that I’m in my third year, I’m noticing that I’m calmer and more balanced. In two years I want to start my own practice and help people in a meaningful way, with more attention and peace of mind than I ever found in healthcare.

Frequently asked questions

When does the training start?

You can start the basic year several times a year. If you are new, you can start with a part of the basic year by taking a Shiatsu Intensive. You will then follow 2 months of lessons and learn how to give a complete treatment. After that, you decide whether to continue with the rest of the basic level. You can register for the Amsterdam, Delft or Amersfoort location. In Amsterdam, the lessons are on Monday evenings from 19:00 to 22:00. In Delft and Amersfoort, on Sundays from 9:30 to 17:00.
The lesson schedule can be found here

What are the admission requirements for this program?

People from various backgrounds start our training. You don’t need any specific massage knowledge or knowledge of Eastern medicine to start. Step by step, we ensure that you master the profession as a Shiatsu therapist.

Since you will receive a diploma at HBO level, we do impose certain requirements on your previous education. These requirements are at least HAVO, VWO or MBO-IV level. If you do not meet these requirements, you may still participate in the program under certain conditions. If you have any questions about this, please contact us.

Do I have to register immediately for 4 years?

No, you can start with a shiatsu trial module first and only after completing this trial module will you decide whether to continue with a subsequent module or the rest of the basic level (basic year). Also, after completing the basic level, you will only decide whether to continue with the meridian level.

After the basic year (basic level), you can already start giving relaxing shiatsu treatments. If you wish, you can also charge money for this. To ensure that you meet all legal requirements, you will then become a student member of the professional association and take out professional liability insurance.

If you choose to make Shiatsu your profession, the training takes 4 years and 4 months. Because we want you to master shiatsu at a high level, this length of time is really necessary. Because we teach at an HBO-compliant level of 240 ECTS (credits), you also meet the requirements the tax authorities require for the VAT exemption (so you don’t have to pay VAT). Furthermore, your treatments are recognized by the health insurance companies. During those 4 years, we teach you entrepreneurial skills as well, if you want to build a successful private practice.

How much time does it cost me?

In the first year, the study is perfectly compatible with a full-time job and a busy family life. You have an evening class once a week on average. You practice the material once a week with friends and people in your immediate environment. In addition, you have some assignments that you discuss and work out with a study group. In the later years, the workload gradually increases. You will be dealing with more topics and writing reports.

How many hours you actually study (or practice) varies from person to person. The important thing is that you see shiatsu as something you enjoy doing. Where your passion lies and what makes you happy. Spending time on something that makes you happy is nice to do.

What we generally see is that students in the third and fourth year experience that shiatsu becomes a part of their lives. Often, they choose to free up time for their studies by, for example, working half a day less a week or spending time on developing and expanding their own shiatsu practice.

What do I learn?

In the basic year you learn the foundation of Iokai Shiatsu; everything you learn in these modules is necessary for the rest of your studies. The focus is on developing good touch and being able to apply the basic techniques to the receiver’s body in different positions.

The first year is also an introduction to the basic principles of traditional Eastern medicine. The traditional Eastern way of thinking is fundamentally different from that in our Western society. During the theoretical classes, we introduce you to this way of thinking.

To improve your own body awareness, fitness and body control, we start every class with Do-In, Ki training, meditation or occasionally with Qi Qong.

In addition to the subject-specific shiatsu modules, you will also begin therapeutic training in your first year. You will learn how to give feedback to each other and how to take a neutral position during shiatsu treatments.

If you successfully complete all the modules of the basic level, you will receive a certificate. You can then give a deeply relaxing treatment to the people in your environment. You have learned to use your body in the right way and to touch someone in a way that is effective and pleasant to receive. Additionally, you have experienced personal development on a physical and mental level.

What are the costs?

You can here find the costs.

Is it possible to pay in installments?

You can pay for the entire basic level in 8 monthly installments.

What makes the program unique?

We are primarily a practical training program. Our classes consist of 90% hours of practical training in the first year and about 70 to 80% hours in the following years. Shiatsu is a practical skill. Your skills determine a large part of the effectiveness of your treatment. Of course, your theoretical knowledge is also important, but our focus is primarily on the practice. The theory we teach is based on many practical examples and in a way that you don’t just learn the material from your head, but also understand it in its simplest form.

During the lessons, there are always multiple teachers/assistants present to support you and be there for you when you need them. We believe in a personal approach where every student feels comfortable.

We are a European organization that places high demands on the teachers and assistants who help you during your studies. Annual training sessions for the teachers take place and attention is paid to the proper teaching methods. The teachers undergo annual training sessions from, among others, Kazunori Sasaki. One of the most prominent shiatsu teachers in Europe and also one of the closest assistants to the late Shizuto Masunaga.
