Shiatsu Japanese massage therapy

What is Iokai Shiatsu?

Iokai Shiatsu is an Eastern medical practice that you practice using your hands. At the heart of it is the concept of ‘Ki’, or life energy. Eastern medicine sees our health, our thoughts, and how we feel as a form of energy (Ki). With Shiatsu massage, you work directly on this life energy (Ki) and ensure that it can flow properly again.

We all have blockages in our bodies. This is caused by external influences, experiences from the past, or the way we have lived our lives. This results in a less efficient flow of Ki. This can manifest in various complaints such as:

• little energy
• headache
• excessive thinking
• not feeling comfortable in your own skin

If Ki does not circulate properly over a long period of time, it can cause serious health problems. With this Shiatsu training, you will learn to give a massage that ensures Ki flows again and improves the symptoms.

With Shiatsu, you help improve your clients’ Ki circulation. But you also learn to improve your own Ki circulation. You gain more energy, become healthier and more stable.

What will you learn?

In this practical module, you will learn the basic principles of Iokai Shiatsu and Eastern medicine. The lessons are delivered in a pleasant and inspiring environment by experienced teachers from our highly regarded Iokai Shiatsu professional training program. The lessons are fun, educational, and dynamic, so you will enjoy going to class. We primarily focus on practical exercises for yourself and with each other. You will learn to give a relaxing shiatsu treatment from head to toe, including mobilizations and stretches. You will learn to perform this in one of the four basic positions that patients can assume during a treatment. At the end, you can give a relaxing treatment to people in your community.

One of the core principles of Iokai Shiatsu is the Japanese concept hara. Hara is both our physical and energetic center and plays a fundamental role in the Japanese tradition. When we touch from the hara, This is done without coercion, but with a gentle and clear presence. It is a touch without prejudice, without the thought that we have to do or achieve something. It is a touch from silence, pure and with integrity. This principle forms the basis of Iokai Shiatsu and is practiced throughout the entire training. In the modules of the basic level, there is extra emphasis on this.

Sleep like a block

After the first lesson, I came home tired but satisfied. I slept like a log! What I appreciate is that you have a whole day to really practice and deepen. In an evening class you often only get to do a small part of it, but now we covered the entire kata in just a few weekend days.

The bond you build with your fellow students and teachers is special, deeper than I had expected. It was also great because I was going through an emotional period, so it was nice to feel genuine support and love.

The intensive days, practicing together, the feedback… it really helps. I find it a shame that this kata is almost over and I look forward to the next module!”

Perfect to combine with work

“The katamodule was a real game-changer for me. I’d been looking for a Shiatsu training for a while, but I work full-time, so an evening class would be difficult. And then this came along in one fell swoop. These four days fit perfectly into my schedule. The pace is fast, but easy to follow — and you learn a huge amount in a short time. You really dive headfirst into the subject, have plenty of time for questions and practice, and you notice that after each class you gain more confidence. The atmosphere in the group was safe and supportive, thanks to the teachers who are very skilled and really take the time. I had no experience with Shiatsu, but I got along just fine. From day one, you start practicing on others, and you see how powerful it is. I’m looking forward to the next module!”

Unique Shiatsu training in the Netherlands

The Iokai Shiatsu Professional Training is a 4-year part-time program that prepares you to become a certified Shiatsu therapist. The program is known for its practice-oriented, in-depth approach to Shiatsu as a way of life and not just as a profession.

And that’s not surprising; our teachers learned the subject directly from the founder of Iokai Shiatsu, Shizuto Masunaga. One of his students, Sasaki Sensei, is still associated with our training as a teacher.

You will learn not only about Shiatsu techniques, but also about the life philosophy behind them. How to use the power of touch to create a deep connection and integrate this into a holistic approach to health and well-being.

     Our program offers:

A practical experience that you can immediately apply

Personal attention and guidance in small groups

Experienced teachers who share their passion and deep knowledge

A foundation for your professional and personal development

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need prior knowledge to participate?

No, prior knowledge is not required. The series is designed so that anyone, regardless of prior knowledge or experience, can participate and learn the basic principles of Shiatsu.

These modules are intended for anyone interested in Shiatsu and Oriental medicine. Whether you are a healthcare professional, a massage therapist seeking further training, or someone considering a career change; as long as you are interested in learning Shiatsu techniques and philosophies, you are most welcome.

What is the difference between this trial module and the regular training course?

In this trial module, you will follow one of the modules of the basic level; you will do this for about 2 months. A trial module is therefore basically the same as 1 module of the basic level. After the end of the trial module, you will decide whether to continue with the next module of the basic level or whether you might want to enroll yourself in the entire basic level.

Can I continue with the training to become a Shiatsu therapist after these modules?

In this Shiatsu Intensive, you will follow 1 module from the basic level. After the end, you decide whether to continue with a next module from the basic level or to enroll yourself for the entire basic level.

More information about the training can be found here >>>

    How large is the group?

We work with a small group to ensure personal attention and guidance. The maximum number of participants is 16, to ensure the quality of the education and to ensure that each student can gain sufficient practical experience.

Will I receive a certificate at the end?

At the end of each module (the abdominal and the back module), you will receive a certificate of participation. The certificate will indicate the number of ECTS credits for each module.

What if I can't attend all the classes?

We recommend that you complete all the lessons, but it is of course possible that you cannot attend a lesson because you are sick or on vacation. In that case, we recommend that you practice the course material yourself using the instruction videos on our electronic learning platform and that you discuss the course material with your fellow students and practice it together. You can miss up to 1 lesson day if you wish to receive the certificate of participation. If necessary, it is possible to compensate for the missed lesson day in consultation with your teacher in another way.

What are the conditions for being eligible for the subsidy?

Anyone who would like to get acquainted with this Japanese medicine in an intensive way can be eligible for the grant. The grant fund is limited. There is a maximum of 8 participants per location for the grant! You are only eligible if you have not previously received a grant.

    Why is funding being provided?

The Iokai Shiatsu Professional Training has some sponsors who support the thought and vision of Iokai and who support our training. These are various organizations, some of which focus on vitality in companies on a holistic basis, and others have a link to Eastern medicine and Japan.

These are relatively small sums, so only a limited number of participants can benefit from them. We are making this grant available in consultation with the sponsors to allow a number of people to learn about Iokai Shiatsu through the Shiatsu Intensive. This is in the hope that some of this group will go on to become proficient in Iokai Shiatsu and, in turn, spread our vision.
