Working from hara – your inner peace spot
The characteristic of Iokai Shiatsu is the intention and attitude of the giver. As an Iokai Shiatsu chair masseur, you work from your hara – your energy and physical center. That requires presence, concentration, and integrity. You touch without force, without wanting to change or achieve anything. It is precisely because of this that the other person relaxes, and you can create profound effects in a short time.
Hara is a core principle within Iokai Shiatsu. When you work from this center, you also experience more stability yourself – physically, mentally, and emotionally. You develop a calm and open way of touching, which is both pleasant and powerful for both you and the recipient.
Development of the chair massage training
The Shiatsu Chair Massage course consists of three modules. You start with two practice modules from the basic level of the Iokai Shiatsu course. In these modules you learn the basic principles of Shiatsu according to the Japanese tradition: working from your energy center (hara) and using the natural gravity. You practice these skills on a Japanese futon (mat), where you learn how to touch from a state of calm and stability.
After this basic course, you can follow the Shiatsu Chair Massage module. In this module you learn how to apply the same principles to the massage chair. You develop an effective way of working in short 20-minute sessions – suitable for both private individuals and use in the workplace.
Construction of the modules
You follow two practice modules from the basic level and the module Shiatsu Chair Massage:
Basic level practice modules:
Weekly classes – 5 Sundays (Amersfoort) or 9 Monday evenings in Amsterdam or 9 Tuesday evenings in Delft. And 1 common Sunday for all locations combined.
Buikligkata – 5 Sundays (Amersfoort) or 9 Monday evenings in Amsterdam or 9 Tuesday evenings in Delft. And 1 common Sunday for all locations together.

Shiatsu Chair Massage Module:
– Duration: 3 days (Amersfoort)
What do you learn in the chair massage module?
After completing two practice modules at the basic level, you will take part in the Shiatsu Chair Massage module. In this three-day module, you will learn how to give a complete chair massage according to the principles of Iokai Shiatsu – with attention, tailored to the recipient, and from your hara.
You develop a flexible and creative way of working, where you learn to vary from a fixed base form (kata). Mobilizations and stretches are integrated to increase freedom of movement and deepen the effectiveness of the treatment.
In addition to the practical techniques, we also focus on the application of chair shiatsu in work situations. How do you present yourself in the workplace? What setting requires which approach? You learn to act professionally in various situations, including recognizing contraindications and dealing with possible reactions.
The training consists of two days of instruction in which theory and practice are combined. After that, you will work independently and give fifty chair massages to different recipients. You will complete the first twenty-five before the return day, when a practical test will take place. The theoretical test will be taken through the online learning environment.
Upon completion of all parts, you will receive the certificate Shiatsu Chair Massage and you are able to work professionally – in your own practice or within organizations.

The chair massage course is given on-site The Chapel, Weverssingel 36, Amersfoort.
The practical modules are taught in Delft, Amsterdam and Amersfoort.

If you have already completed two practical modules from the basic year, please register for the chair massage module 3 only, without the shiatsu practical modules.. Module 3 can only be taken if you have completed modules 1 and 2, or if you have previously completed a shiatsu training course elsewhere.
