Post Graduate Diagnosis Module

An intensive 3-day course for graduated Shiatsu therapists.

By Ans Harmsen

Depth in the diagnosis and treatment of your clients

Shiatsu is a profession in which you never really get tired. As you treat more people and gain more experience, you also see and feel more and more. At the same time, new questions arise.

Why do I choose this treatment for this client? What does my feeling actually tell me? How do the different diagnoses relate to each other? And how do I arrive at a treatment that truly suits this client based on everything I observe?

We, as teachers, recognize this ourselves. Your knowledge and experience grow, but at the same time, there is also more and more room for in-depth study.

We hear from many former students that they need to practice together again over time, explore questions from their own practice, and further develop certain aspects of the diagnosis.

From that need, we have created this intensive postgraduate module.

Connecting diagnosis and treatment

The focus is on making diagnoses and translating them into treatment.

This involves not only practicing individual diagnostic techniques, but especially the connection between them.

What do you see? What do you feel? What does the Hara tell you? What does the wrist tell you? Which life functions play a role? And how do you combine all that information into a clear treatment strategy?

We want to help you learn to look at and treat people more freely from a solid foundation. So that you can better recognize what is happening in a client and how different aspects are interconnected.

Your treatment therefore focuses not only on the complaint that someone comes in with, but increasingly on the whole situation and what lies beneath it.

A lot of practice from the field

The postgraduate module consists of three practical-oriented teaching days.

We practice a lot, treat each other, and work with situations that you encounter in your own practice. Specifically, we pay attention to Hara diagnosis and working with Bo and Yu points.

But always from the question: how do you use what you observe within your overall diagnosis and treatment?

What will be discussed?

During the postgraduate module, we work with, among other things:

  • perceiving from your own center
  • interpreting what you see and feel and translating this into treatment
  • Hara diagnosis and treatment of the Hara
  • the life functions and their interrelation
  • Applying Bo and Yu points
  • cases from your own practice
  • Taking care of yourself as a therapist

In doing so, she is happy to draw on the experiences that you have gained in your own practice and also on any questions that arise from your practice.

The Post Graduate module gave me:

  • Deeper insights
  • More self-confidence
  • A broader perspective

“As a Shiatsu therapist, you always continue to learn, especially when you suddenly start working full-time in the field after graduating. The clients’ questions are diverse and sometimes challenging, which led me to need more confidence in my diagnosis and treatment. The Post Graduate module of Iokai Shiatsu has given me that depth of knowledge.”.

In just a few lessons, I have improved my treatment techniques and have become more free and efficient in my work. It is a wonderful opportunity to share experiences and gain new insights with other therapists. The combination of repetition and deepening ensures that you can immediately apply your expertise in your practice. This module has truly helped me gain more confidence in my work and broaden my perspective.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Post Graduate module to therapists who are looking for more confidence and deeper insights in their treatments.”

Content of the module

Your own practice as a starting point

There is plenty of room to submit your own questions and case studies.

Situations where you are unsure, stuck, or curious about whether you can look at and treat things in a different way are valuable to explore together.

Between the lessons, there is enough time to apply what you have learned in your own practice. The experiences and questions that arise from that, you take with you to the next lesson day.

This is how you build on what you already know and are able to do, and step by step deepen your own way of perceiving, diagnosing, and treating.

As you are used to from us, we teach in an organic way. That means that the program is largely fixed, but depending on your questions, we deepen some topics more or less or include other topics in practical situations.

“After an earlier Shiatsu training that was more focused on the Chinese medicine, I noticed that I lacked the practical depth. I was curious about the approach of Iokai Shiatsu, which focuses more on the Japanese approach and the physical, energetic aspect. The Post Graduate Training offered me the opportunity to experience those methods in practice.

What immediately caught my attention was the warm atmosphere. In addition, there was a great emphasis on practice, meditation, and Do-In. Iokai challenges you to truly feel and stay with the body, without immediately getting caught up in your mind.

In the Post Graduate module you go back to the basics again, which ensures that you always gain new layers of understanding and find more depth. This is especially important for experienced therapists. It’s like a spiral, with each round bringing new insights and taking your treatment to a deeper level.

I would definitely recommend this refresher course to therapists who are looking to deepen their knowledge of the physical aspect of Shiatsu, and who want to learn more about the power of touch and feeling. It was the perfect addition to my previous training and experience. In fact, if I were to choose again, I would have chosen the Iokai Shiatsu course over the other options.”
