Further training Okyu Moxa
The refined power of heat as a complement to Shiatsu
Okyu moxa for your shiatsu practice
As a Shiatsu therapist, you work with touch, pressure, and the meridians. But sometimes a treatment requires something extra. For example, with a client who experiences constant coldness, is chronically fatigued, or suffers from persistent stiffness.
OKYU is a traditional Japanese moxication technique that allows you to add targeted heat to your treatment. A subtle but powerful technique that fits well with the way Iokai Shiatsu works.
During this practical refresher course, you will learn how to apply OKYU safely and effectively and discover how to integrate this technique into your own shiatsu practice.
What is OKYO MOXA?
OKYU, also known as Thread Moxa, is a sophisticated form of Japanese moxibustion. In this procedure, very small cones of moxa, about the size of a rice grain, are placed at specific points on the body and briefly burned.
This technique provides a short, concentrated heat stimulus that can be precisely dosed. Unlike using large moxas, you work with minimal amounts of moxa. This makes the technique subtle and well-suited for combining with a shiatsu treatment.
Within Japanese medicine, moxa is traditionally used to support Ki, dispel cold, and bring movement to stagnations.
What does OKYU add to your shiatsu treatment?
With OKYU, you expand your treatment options. You learn how to use targeted heat as a complement to pressure and touch.
The technique is particularly interesting in patterns where coldness, fatigue or stagnation play a role. Think for example of clients with long-term stiffness, joint complaints or menstrual problems.
OKYU offers you the opportunity to:
- Applying targeted heat to specific tsubo and meridians.
- Within the traditional Japanese approach, Ki is used to support and treat stagnation.
- An additional technique to use when touch and pressure alone do not seem sufficient.
- Integrating heat therapy in a natural way into your existing shiatsu treatment.
Precisely because the technique is so sophisticated, OKYU requires precision, attention, and a well-developed sensitivity. Qualities that you already use daily as a Shiatsu therapist.
What do you learn during this refresher course?
This lesson day focuses primarily on experiencing and practicing on your own. You learn the technique step by step and apply it under supervision.
To be discussed:
- The origin and function of OKYU within Japanese medicine.
- Preparing the moxa and rolling small moxa sticks.
- Accurate and safe application of heat to the skin.
- The choice of suitable tsubos and the possibilities of application in various symptom patterns.
- Indications, contra-indications and safety considerations.
- Combining OKYU with your own shiatsu treatment.
At the end of the course, you will have the basic skills to continue practicing with OKYU and apply the technique, within the limits of your expertise, in your practice.
Who is this refresher course for?
This refresher course is intended for graduated Shiatsu therapists and advanced Shiatsu students who want to expand their treatment options.
You do not need any experience with moxa. Basic knowledge of meridians is sufficient.
