What is Iokai Shiatsu?

Iokai Shiatsu is a traditional Eastern healing practice that uses the hands to support health and well-being. At its heart is the concept of ‘Ki’, or life energy. In Eastern medicine, our physical health, thoughts and emotions are all understood as expressions of Ki. Through Shiatsu massage, we work directly with this life energy, helping it flow freely and harmoniously throughout the body.

We all experience blockages in our bodies. These may develop through external influences, past experiences or the way we have lived our lives. From an Eastern medicine perspective, these blockages can disrupt the natural flow of Ki and may manifest in various ways, such as:

• little energy
• headache
• excessive thinking
• not feeling comfortable in your own skin

If Ki does not circulate properly over a long period of time, it can cause serious health problems. With this Shiatsu training, you will learn to give a massage that ensures Ki flows again and improves the symptoms.

With Shiatsu, you help improve your clients’ Ki circulation. But you also learn to improve your own Ki circulation. You gain more energy, become healthier and more stable.

What will you learn?

In Shiatsu Intensive, you learn the basic principles of Iokai Shiatsu and Eastern medicine. The classes are held in a pleasant and inspiring environment by experienced teachers from our highly regarded Iokai Shiatsu Professional Training school. The classes are fun, educational, and dynamic, so you will be eager to attend. We mainly work practically on ourselves and with each other. You will learn to give a relaxing shiatsu treatment from head to toe, including mobilizations and stretching. You will learn to perform this in one of the four basic positions that patients can assume during a treatment: lying on their back. At the end, you can give a relaxing treatment to people in your community.

After completing this module, you can start the existing foundation year of the program. The next module you will complete will be the sitting position.

From relaxing energy to active energy

During the Shiatsu Intensive, you learn to give shiatsu in the supine position. The supine position is a special position. During the supine position, you treat ‘hara’, or the abdomen, our energy center. When our energy center is stable, we are also more stable (and happy). In addition, the supine position is characterized by the fact that the treatment provides more active energy. It is wonderful to activate this energy during the spring season as preparation for the summer.

During the Shiatsu Intensive you not only learn how to apply these skills in treatments, but also how to use them to better understand and strengthen your own energy.

  • Shiatsu techniques in a supine position: Discover how to build energy and stimulate activation, appropriate for the spring energy and the summer.
  • Hara as the center: Work from your own balance (hara) and strengthen your connection with the other person.

Slept like a log

After the first few days of the intensive course, I came home tired but satisfied. I slept like a log! What I appreciate is that you have a whole day to really practice and deepen your knowledge. In an evening class you often get to cover only a small part, but now we covered the entire kata.

The bond you build with your fellow students and teachers is special, deeper than I had expected. It was also great because I was going through an emotional period, so it was nice to feel genuine support and love.

The intensive days, practicing together, the feedback… it really helps you a lot. I find it a shame that this is almost over kata already and I look forward to the next intensive!”

“Connecting through touch has been the inspiration for me since the very first moment I encountered shiatsu; it is the reason I still bike to my practice or the training dojo with great pleasure. A simple touch can bring so much to life; it brings people back to their own core. As a teacher on the training program, it is always incredibly beautiful to see students make that same connection for the first time; their wonder, excitement, joy, and pride. Being part of their further development as therapists, seeing their understanding of what health from an Eastern perspective actually is, and their passion for our beautiful craft continue to grow, is enormously valuable to me; it allows me to continue growing as a human being.”

Unique Shiatsu training in the Netherlands

The Iokai Shiatsu Professional Training is a 4-year part-time program that prepares you to become a certified Shiatsu therapist. The program is known for its practice-oriented, in-depth approach to Shiatsu as a way of life and not just as a profession.

And that’s not surprising; our teachers learned the subject directly from the founder of Iokai Shiatsu, Shizuto Masunaga. One of his students, Sasaki Sensei, is still associated with our training as a teacher.

You will learn not only about Shiatsu techniques, but also about the life philosophy behind them. How to use the power of touch to create a deep connection and integrate this into a holistic approach to health and well-being.

 Our program offers:

A practical experience that you can immediately apply

Personal attention and guidance in small groups

Experienced teachers who share their passion and deep knowledge

A foundation for your professional and personal development

Frequently asked questions

Do I need prior knowledge to participate?

No, prior knowledge is not required. The series is designed so that anyone, regardless of prior knowledge or experience, can participate and learn the basic principles of Shiatsu.

These modules are intended for anyone interested in Shiatsu and Oriental medicine. Whether you are a healthcare professional, a massage therapist seeking further training, or someone considering a career change; as long as you are interested in learning Shiatsu techniques and philosophies, you are most welcome.

What is the difference between this Shiatsu Intensive and the regular training?

In this Shiatsu Intensive you follow modules from the basic level; the back-bending module. After completing the abdominal-bending module, you decide whether to continue with the next module of the basic level. If you are interested, you can possibly start with the meridian level after the summer.

Can I continue with the training to become a Shiatsu therapist after these modules?

In this Shiatsu Intensive you will follow two modules from the basic level; the abdominal module and the back module. These modules make up just over half of the basic level. After completing the abdominal module, you decide whether to continue with the back module. If you have completed both, you can then participate in the rest of the basic level using an adapted program. If you are interested, you can possibly start the meridian level after the summer.

More information about the training can be found here >>>

How large is the group?

We work with a small group to ensure personal attention and guidance. The maximum number of participants is 16, to ensure the quality of the education and to ensure that each student can gain sufficient practical experience.

Will I receive a certificate at the end?

At the end of each module (the abdominal and the back module), you will receive a certificate of participation. The certificate will indicate the number of ECTS credits for each module.

What if I can't attend all the classes?

We recommend that you complete all the lessons, but it is of course possible that you cannot attend a lesson because you are sick or on vacation. In that case, we recommend that you practice the course material yourself using the instruction videos on our electronic learning platform and that you discuss the course material with your fellow students and practice it together. You can miss up to 1 lesson day if you wish to receive the certificate of participation. If necessary, it is possible to compensate for the missed lesson day in consultation with your teacher in another way.

What are the conditions for being eligible for the subsidy?

Anyone who would like to get acquainted with this Japanese medicine in an intensive way can be eligible for the grant. The grant fund is limited. There is a maximum of 8 participants eligible for the grant!

As a condition for receiving the subsidy, you must be able to provide a certificate of participation. You will receive this when you have completed all the lessons.

Why is funding being provided?

The Iokai Shiatsu Professional Training has some sponsors who support the thought and vision of Iokai and who support our training. These are various organizations, some of which focus on vitality in companies on a holistic basis, and others have a link to Eastern medicine and Japan.

These are relatively small sums, so only a limited number of participants can benefit from them. We are making this grant available in consultation with the sponsors to allow a number of people to learn about Iokai Shiatsu through the Shiatsu Intensive. This is in the hope that some of this group will go on to become proficient in Iokai Shiatsu and, in turn, spread our vision.
